In my work, I aim to reflect my perspective on contemporary issues, particularly the question of human identity. This includes the exploration of the reality of our physical bodies versus our online personas, questioning which is more authentic. Additionally, I seek to blur the lines between traditional Chinese ink painting and Western painting. My goal is to recontextualize ink painting within the category of art while also reflecting the hybrid cultural environment which I live in. - Wu, Yeou-Xin
Wu, Yeou-Xin obtained his Ph.D. in Art Creation and Theory from National Taiwan Normal University in 2011. By 2013, he began his academic career, and he is currently a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. Wu is not only a professor but also a painter and photographer. His comprehensive training spans traditional Chinese ink painting, contemporary art theories, and painting techniques. Wu has long focused on integrating traditional and contemporary elements, offering concrete theoretical and creative insights. His works are collected by institutions such as the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and have been exhibited both in Taiwan and internationally.
Wu, Yeou-Xin 's works consistently demonstrate his solid painting skills, rendering figures with a high degree of realism. He uses traditional ink and paper to create a soft, poetic texture that challenges the limitations and conventional perceptions of realism in traditional ink painting. In 2007, Wu's paintings often drew from popular media images like advertisements and television, collaging them into realistic scenes. However, in the past decade, his work has evolved to incorporate his own photography and digital graphics as sources for his ink paintings. Through meticulous, realistic visual representations, he explores the homogeneity and differences among various forms of two-dimensional art. Starting from traditional ink painting, he continuously transcends its boundaries, deconstructing traditional notions of ink painting. This approach follows the developmental trend of modern ink painting in Taiwan and reflects the new generation's expression of their cultural identity. As Wu, Yeou-Xin advocates, contemporary ink painting is no longer just a medium; it is a symbol and a concept.
